Infection Control
Guidance for visitors
Infections can be spread by anyone so we all need to be careful. There are simple things we can all do to stop germs spreading. To help protect patients, caregivers, and yourself, please follow these infection prevention and control measures during your visit:
Before you visit
Do not visit if you feel unwell (e.g. fever, cough, sore throat, diarrhoea or vomiting in the past 48 hours). Please telephone and check with the ward if you are unsure prior to visiting. Wash your hands thoroughly before leaving home.
On arrival
Use hand sanitiser to decontaminate your hands at the entrance and throughout your visit. If requested wear a face mask, especially in high-risk areas or during outbreaks.
Follow signage and staff instructions regarding movement or outbreaks within the hospital.
During your visit
Limit physical contact to your friend, relative, loved one only.
Maintain respiratory hygiene: cover coughs/sneezes with a tissue or elbow, dispose of tissues safely, and sanitise hands immediately.
Wash or sanitise your hands regularly and especially after using the bathroom or prior to eating and drinking.
Report any infection control concerns as soon as possible to a clinical caregiver.
Personal Protective Equipment (PPE)
You may be asked to wear PPE (e.g. gloves, apron, mask) depending on the area or patient condition. Staff will guide you on how to use PPE correctly.
Children and vulnerable visitors
Children must be supervised at all times during visits and adhere to the infection prevention and control measures.
Vulnerable individuals (e.g. immunocompromised) should consult staff before visiting.
After your visit
Sanitise or wash your hands before leaving.
Report any symptoms of ill health that develop within 48 hours of your visit to the hospital.
