Registration now open for Hindhead’s charity run

Registration is now open for Hindhead’s traditional fundraising Boxing Day Run. The charity fun run takes place each year to raise money for Holy Cross Hospital in Haslemere, which provides highly specialised care to people with severe brain injury and neurological conditions.

All levels of runners, from absolute beginners to serious athletes are encouraged to sign up to the 3.5-mile (approximately 5k) run. Registration costs from £10 at www.boxingdayrun.org with all profits going to Holy Cross Hospital.

“If you’ve not joined us for the Boxing Day Run before, do come along this year. The 3.5-mile route goes through the stunning Devil’s Punchbowl and is the perfect way to enjoy fresh air and work off those extra Christmas Day roast potatoes. Over 600 people took part last year and we expect similar numbers this year. I can guarantee that the race will be a lot of fun so please do join us,” says organiser Matt Dellar.

There is a choice of a standard run or the drinking run where a pint of winter ale is served at mile two. Each runner will receive a timing chip provided by Race Timing Solutions and medals will be awarded to the finishers. Winners of the men’s and women’s categories for each run are announced at the prize giving at 12pm.

“The race starts at a very civilised 11am at the Devil’s Punchbowl Hotel. Lots of people will be planning a Boxing Day walk so why not be just a little more energetic and run instead?” says Matt. “Although it’s a fun run, there is plenty of competition; last year’s winner crossed the line in an impressive 21:47 minutes so it’s a great festive race for serious runners too.”

Among this year’s runners will be Christopher Hinton, Chief Executive at Holy Cross Hospital and Bill Kurshid who is a member of the Friends of Holy Cross.

Christopher Hinton, the Chief Executive of Holy Cross Hospital, says: “Having taken part in the Boxing Day Run previously, I can honestly say that participants will have a great time. Matt generously gives up his time each year to organise this fantastic fundraiser. I’m also grateful to Wilson Electrical Distributors Ltd who are sponsoring the race for the first time and to the Hogs Back Brewery, Haslemere Travel and The Sports Locker.

“Money raised from last year’s Boxing Day Run went towards the Never Out of Breath project to install piped oxygen to all hospital rooms. Now in place, piped oxygen has replaced oxygen cylinders, giving reassurance to patients and freeing up nurses to provide care. The donation we receive from the Boxing Day Run every year makes a big difference to our patients and their families and we are thankful to all who contribute.”

Runners should register as soon as possible as registration on the day will be limited. Visit www.boxingdayrun.org to book your place.
