Waverley Design Awards 2009
For the first time ever, the Waverley Design Awards 2009 asked the public to get involved and vote for their favourite building. The new Physiotherapy Centre won 3 awards including the People's Choice Award, the Sustainable Design & Construction Award (sponsored by WWF-UK) and the New Building Award (Non-Residential). Our thanks to everyone who sent in a nomination for us and for all the wonderful messages about our new building that were read out at the ceremony.
Boxing Day Fun Run 2009
The traditional three-and-a-half mile Boxing Day Fun Run took place in 2009, starting from the Crown and Cushion. There were three categories; the Mens' Run, the Ladies' Run and the Drinking Run that included a pint of winter ale at the 2 mile mark.
The run was organised by local businessman Matt Dellar from Active Presentation Services. The 2008 Boxing Day Fun Run raised £1,750 for Holy Cross Hospital, which was used to purchase an Aquarider bicycle for the new Physiotherapy Centre.
Official Opening of the Physiotherapy Centre
On 17 July 2009 the Physiotherapy Centre at Holy Cross Hospital was officially opened by the Right Reverend Kieran Conry, Bishop of Arundel and Brighton. Over 90 guests attended the event and the Bishop paid tribute to the vision of the Sisters and their work in achieving their long-standing dream of a hyrdotherapy pool. The event was well covered in the local press and was most successful.
Day trips to Selsey
Throughout the first week of each month from spring to October, a group sets off from the Hospital for a at the seafront cottage provided by the Daughters of the Cross. Each group comprises three patients, plus volunteers and nursing staff. After arrival a walk along the seafront precedes lunch. Further walks may take place afterwards in order to work up an appetite for tea before making the return journey.
This excursion provides our patients, their families and friends the opportunity to spend a day outside the hospital in an environment that is informal and welcoming. Families can share their experiences with each other to draw strength and provide support. These trips would not take place without the time and effort contributed by our volunteers, who act as drivers and helpers throughout the day.
